Digital photography has opened the door for everyone to become a photographer, and to discover,
enjoy, and record the beauty that surrounds us. No longer is the pursuit of photography mired in
the technical. “Point and shoot” is now the equivalent of Kodak’s early box camera tagline: “Press
the button and we do the rest.” The ease, fun, and satisfaction of truly instant digital photography
have made us all photographers: Point, shoot, and share.

Chris Orwig photographed me in Las Vegas a few years ago, and it was a humbling
experience as a photographer, particularly for one making his living on
assignment for the international NGO and humanitarian community. Chris is a
gentle person in the truest sense of the word. He is kind, and if this makes any
sense at all, he listens with his eyes. When Chris photographs he slows down.

My name is Thomas Leuthard and I’m a street photographer from Switzerland. I started to focus on street photography in 2009 when I decided to take all my photos with an 85mm lens in the streets. After some time I realized that this lens was too long for this purpose. The focal length changed, the name remained and I got closer and closer. Today I take some of my street photos with a 50mm from a very short distance

It was over 35 years ago that I realized that
I really enjoyed photographing women. I soon found out that I really didn’t know
what I was doing, so I bought a copy of famous glamour photographer Peter
Gowland’s book, How to Photograph Women. It was through his mastery and explanation
of the subject that my learning began. From that simple beginning, a career and
love of photography has spanned nearly four decades. I owe him special gratitude for
helping me begin.

Our three previous photography guides have
covered composition, exposure and colour
– now it’s time to look at the element which is the key
infl uence for all three aspects. As a photographer, you
need to learn to love light, appreciate its endless
subtleties and try to make the most of its mood
swings.

The biggest advantage digital has over fi lm is the
fact that you can check your shot once you’ve
taken it. You can bring up a histogram to check the
brightness range of a scene – and make sure you’re not
underexposing or overexposing it.

Just as a composer has to arrange a piece of music, deciding which instruments will work together, which sounds flow and which clash, so it is that a photographer has to construct powerful images from the visual overload hitting them from all directions. To picture a scene through a photographer’s eyes is very different to just looking at it for what it is.

Digital cameras offer today’s photographer
incredible fl exibility. No more carrying two or
more SLR bodies loaded with different fi lm stocks, or a
bag of colour correction fi lters to counterbalance
unwanted colour shifts in different lighting conditions
(well, you can still carry fi lters – more on that later).
